Charles Morgan, driver and owner of the #46 Acxiom Corvette looks to play a large part in continuing his young team’s success in its Grand American Road Racing program. The #46 Morgan-Dollar Motorsports team pulled off the AGT team championship in just its first season in Grand American competition. Success has not been elusive to the 59-year-old racing enthusiast. Charles graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and has always had a passion for designing, building and racing automobiles and motorcycles. Professionally, he is the Company Leader (CEO) of Little Rock-based Acxiom Corporation. He is also an active pilot in Falcon and Citation jets.
Charles’ last road racing championship occurred in 1993 when he captured the GTO championship. Over a span of 20 years, he has driven in almost 200 road course races in almost every type of modern road racing series including: Grand American Road Racing, NASCAR Truck, IMSA, and Camel Lights. In addition to his driving experience, Charles has been instrumental in the design and production of all the team’s race cars and chassis.
In IMSA GT, Charles is ranked 3rd in all-time driver point standings. He was second in the 1989 championship standings, as well as fifth in 1998 and sixth in 1985, 1987, and 1991. He had 19 IMSA career victories, 14 in Camel Lights competition, three in GTO and two in GTS-1. His victories included one class win in the 24 Hours of Daytona and two class wins in the 12 Hours of Sebring. Charles also beat out the Oldsmobile factory team for Oldsmobile ’s 100th IMSA GT win in 1995.
Charles, his son Rob and David Dollar formed Morgan-Dollar Motorsports in 1998 in an effort to field a team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Rob was the primary driver of the #46 truck from 1998-2000. Charles also played a big part in designing and building the trucks early on. In 2000, Charles joined son Rob in the Bully Hill Vineyard 150 at Watkins Glen for his first ever NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start. Charles won the bragging rights by finishing 18th on the lead lap, while Rob finished 23rd. Their NCTS team has since made many accomplishments and is seeing their first series championship in 2003, with driver Dennis Setzer. The team has amassed two poles, two wins, 16 to-5 finishes and a team high 6th in the point standings in 2002.
In late 2001, Morgan-Dollar Motorsports decided to add a Grand American Road Racing team to their organization. In just a few short weeks, they had assembled the equipment and personnel to field a single-team effort. MDM immediately made their presence known with a second-place AGT class finish in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. By the summer, the team had finished building a second car and once again made a strong debut by winning both the class pole and race in AGT.
Charles Morgan will enter 2003 as a second-year owner/driver of the #46 Corvette in the GT Class. Last season, he piloted the Morgan-Dollar Motorsports Corvette to two wins and was a major factor in the 2002 team championship, in the AGT Class. Charles and Rob teamed to win the pole and the race at the Six Hours of the Glen, with Rob setting a track record for AGT during qualifying. They also participated in the team’s first race at the Rolex 24 at Daytona where they finished second in class and followed that up with a win in the Dark Dog Grand American Finale in Daytona. The win in the season finale was the first time that an AGT finished first in the GT class. Charles participated in both cars that Morgan-Dollar Motorsports fielded, the #46 and #47 Corvettes.
