Hot on the heels of the more powerful Cayman S, the entry-level Cayman went on sale in 2006. Like its more powerful brother, the Cayman was based on the Boxster platform, but with a fixed roof and lifting hatchback. The curvaceous design harked back to Porsche racecars from the 1950s, such as the 550 and 904. While the S had a 3.4-litre engine, the standard Cayman was powered by a 2.7-litre unit, again based on the Boxster powerplant. This produced an acceptable 245bhp and gave the car good performance, coupled with superb handling, thanks to the mid-engined configuration. Unlike the S’s six-speed gearbox, the Cayman had a five-speed transmission, while Tiptronic was an option.
