The Cayenne Turbo offered stunning performance for a big off-roader, with its 450bhp V8 powering the heavy car to 62mph in just 5.6 seconds, and on to a top speed of 165mph.

The engine was essentially the same 4.5-litre V8 used in the Cayenne S but with a lower compression ratio to cope with the effect the twin turbochargers.

Interestingly, the Turbo was offered only with a six-speed Tiptronic S transmission, that gave the choice of fully automatic changes, or manual shifts via either steering wheel mounted paddles or the selector lever.

The air suspension controlled the vehicle’s height so it sat closer to the ground at high speed to give increased stability. In off-road mode, on the other hand, the ground clearance could increase to up to 555mm to negotiate rough terrain.

The Turbo had a well-appointed interior, with full leather all round, an electrically adjustable and heated steering wheel, electrically adjustable seats, Bose sound system, sat-nav and much more.
